NW Neuro and Stroke Psychology SIG Mental Capacity Workshop

The learning objectives of the workshop are to increase knowledge and confidence in the following areas:
- Introducing the capacity assessment and considering the decision in question
- Enhancing someone’s mental capacity
- Helping people engage in capacity assessments
- Assessing people who are able to ‘talk the talk but not walk the walk’
- Considering salient points and the threshold of understanding, especially when the decision is deemed ‘high risk’
- Documenting capacity assessments
- Taking part in the Best Interests process and considering issues with Safeguarding
Dr Janice Mackenzie, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, and Dr Kate Wilkinson, Clinical Neuropsychologist, were the editors of ‘Assessing Mental Capacity’ which was published in 2020. They will be delivering an all-day workshop on mental capacity in conjunction with other contributors to the book, including Dr Emma Fowler, Clinical Psychologist in Older Adults, and members of the MDT to give a rounded approach to more complex mental capacity dilemmas.
