In 2015, Greater Manchester (including Eastern Cheshire) re-designed its hospital services for stroke patients.
The change was made after stroke research showed that patients with a recent onset of stroke benefited from being treated at specialised centres called Hyper Acute Stroke Units (HASUs). These centres provide clot busting treatments and urgent assessments like brain scans, and have teams of specialist staff – factors shown to increase the chances of survival and recovery from stroke.
You can find out what type of stroke care each of our local hospitals provides using our interactive map of the region below.
Community rehabilitation for stroke survivors in Greater Manchester is also being transformed and in most boroughs patients now receive similar services after they leave hospital.
You can find out more general information about stroke by visiting the Stroke Association website.
Our region's services
The network operates across the Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire region, a population of over 3 million. We work with stroke and community neurorehabilitation services, as well as with other NHS and voluntary sector providers of support.
You can find out more about stroke services here. The region’s inpatient neurorehabilitation care pathway is currently undergoing transformation with services provided at Salford Royal Hospital, the Floyd Unit in Bury,
the Devonshire Centre for Neuro-Rehabilitation in Stockport and Trafford Intermediate Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit. You can find out more about these services here.
