Exercise helps stroke survivor go the distance

A stroke survivor from Greater Manchester has completed the Bury 10K road race while highlighting the vital role that exercise plays in long term stroke recovery.

After being invited by Bury Council’s Living Well Service, Bury Leisure and race organisers RunThrough, Daniel Hulston was given the honour of helping to start the race alongside the Mayor of Bury. He also shared his personal recovery journey with participants before setting off on the course.

Daniel completed the event alongside his gym trainer, Ruth, who specialises in neurological exercise and rehabilitation through the local exercise referral scheme. Following his discharge from the Bury Community Stroke & Neurorehabilitation Team, Ruth became an important part of his ongoing recovery, supporting him to continue exercising safely and confidently.

Over the past few years, we have been working in partnership with GM Active focusing on upskilling clinical and leisure teams in cardiorespiratory training. Exercise is an important part of rehabilitation after a stroke, and was added as a new recommendation in the last edition of the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke.

Daniel’s story demonstrates the growing recognition of the role that physical activity and specialist exercise programmes can play in helping stroke survivors regain independence, improve fitness and enhance quality of life.
