New toolkit launched to support patient and carer involvement
Patient and carer involvement ensures working in equal partnership with people who have lived experience of a condition. Lived experience describes those affected by a condition and is often termed “patient involvement” in healthcare setting (PPI).
Our Patient and Carer Group have been supporting us with our PPI for some time. Recently, we’ve seen our activities move to the next level following the appointment of a new co-ordinator role. The voice of those with lived experience is now being heard in more of our work, and features earlier in our project timelines.
Working in this way helps us stay focused on the diverse needs of the people we are here to support, namely those affected by a neurological condition. Our Patient & Carer Group members tell us that involvement with the network enables them to help others and provides an opportunity to meet like-minded people, and they love the free lunch!
We have developed a PPI toolkit aimed at professionals involved in the improvement of Greater Manchester stroke and neurorehabilitation services. This may include those working in the NHS, local authorities, independent providers of care, academia and the voluntary sector. The content is also likely to be applicable to those working outside of the region or in different disease settings.
The toolkit aims to:
- Provide a greater understanding of patient and carer involvement in developing, delivering and improving stroke and neurorehabilitation services
- Explain why it is important to hear a diverse range of voices and lived experiences
- Offer guidance and suggestions on how to make involvement a reality
- Signpost to useful resources
- Answer common questions and share practical tips
The toolkit and associated resources are available on our Patient and Carer webpages.
We will be launching the toolkit to professionals via a short webinar 3-3.30pm on Wednesday 27th November. The event will provide an overview of the document and share with teams how they can implement in practice. You can register below by following this link: Patient & Public Involvement Webinar
