Updated mood and cognition in stroke guidance now available

We recently approved an update to our Cognition and Mood in Stroke Guidance. This provides strengthened regional standards for the screening and assessment of cognitive and emotional difficulties following stroke, initially collaboratively developed in 2019.

The revised guidance incorporates the National Clinical Guideline for Stroke (2023) and reflects an extensive clinical review led by our former Inpatient Clinical Lead Rachael Collins. It offers clearer expectations on when and how cognition and mood should be assessed, who should undertake assessments, and how results should inform personalised rehabilitation and support. It aims to ensure stroke survivors receive timely identification of cognitive and emotional needs, more personalised rehabilitation plans, and improved access to psychological support throughout their recovery journey.
