Spasticity is involuntary muscle over activity which presents in a variety of ways depending on the size, location and age of the lesion, and may have a number of harmful secondary effects such as pain, deformity and impaired function.

Spasticity management is challenging due to the diversity of patient presentation and goals or aims of treatment. It will normally include a combination of physical and pharmacological management, often using a variety of different approaches according to the individual patient’s needs.

Access to timely and appropriate spasticity services is variable across Greater Manchester. Work is underway to improve access to services so as to provide a joined up patient journey that focuses on early intervention and a multi disciplinary team approach.

You can download the Greater Manchester Spasticity Proforma, appendices here plus we also offer a managing spasticity leaflet.
