The Northern Care Alliance NHS FT Centre for Clinical and Care Research provides a foundation for non-medical clinicians to gain the skills and confidence to become research leaders. You could further your academic career by undertaking a neurologically based post graduate course offered at a number of universities in the UK, as many include a research component.
